OUR STORY
IS HER STORY

The Suyana Designs story is a blend of many.  The first begins in the jungles of Peru when our founder, Susana Rosas, served as a missionary. It was there in a hut with a group of women, where she learned their lives were already mapped out for them. It was there where she discovered women in remote areas of Peru were not being given the same opportunities as other women around the world. Their only roles were to bear children, take care of the household and contribute minimal income through their handmade work. During these conversations, Susana saw their craft, their meticulous attention to detail and the great care they took honoring traditions that were passed down from the generations before them. Each piece historic, creative and one of a kind, just like the women she met.

For the next 10 years, Susana continued to travel to the most remote areas of Peru, – from deep in the Amazon regions to the hillside of the Andes mountains, – exploring the women’s workmanship and character. She traveled to other Latin American countries – Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico – encountering the same challenges and desires of female artisans; each yearning to do more in life yet not knowing how.

During that time, Susana advanced her work in education, received her MBA and served as a nonprofit leader and consultant. She attributes her success to the many women who helped her along the way, – each being a special part of her journey.  Without them, she would not be the woman she is today.  Through this gratitude and reflection is where Suyana began.

Today, the heart of Suyana Designs exists to encourage female artisans to take their future into their own hands with the help of each person who purchases their beautiful products.  These women are unstoppable masterpieces just like the accessories they create. They simply need the support of others to achieve their aspirations.
